Overview

How It Works

Raw sewage undergoes a series of physical, biological and chemical treatment stages to progressively remove solids, organic matter, nutrients and pathogens — producing treated effluent that meets pollution control board (PCB) discharge norms.

Treatment Stages

Preliminary Treatment

  • Bar screens and fine screens to remove large solids, rags and debris
  • Grit chamber to remove sand and heavy inorganic particles
  • Equalization tank to buffer flow and load variations

Primary Treatment

  • Primary settling tank (PST) for gravity settling of suspended solids
  • Sludge collection and transfer to sludge treatment

Secondary (Biological) Treatment

  • Activated sludge process, SBR, MBBR, FBBR or MBR depending on design
  • Biological removal of BOD, COD and suspended solids by microbial action
  • Secondary clarifier for separation of treated water and biomass

Tertiary Treatment

  • Sand filtration and activated carbon filtration for polishing
  • UV disinfection or chlorination to eliminate pathogens
  • Nutrient removal (nitrogen and phosphorus) if required

Sludge Treatment

  • Sludge thickening, digestion and dewatering
  • Filter press or centrifuge for sludge cake production
  • Dried sludge used as manure or landfill
